The thing I loved best about this Royal Court production, was not the wonderful music played by Steve Bargonetti on his guitar or banjo but the music of the scenes, the rhythm in the dialogue. This play has made me realise something that deep down I think I’ve always known: works of dramatic writing are symphonies!
In theatre, conversations can be call and response. Dialogue plays with tempo and dynamics. A diversity of characters provides voices as varied as the instruments in an orchestra. And when a writer can bring all of this together, an invigorating dramatic crescendo is created!
I love theatre that has strong rhythms and makes music out of drama.
Suzan-Lori Parks is a maestro and Father Comes Home From the Wars (Parts 1,2 & 3) is a great composition.
Go see it.
